02 July :- The Supreme Court has expressed its resolve to delay the appointment of Lokpal. The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Center’s Modi government to fix the deadline for the appointment of Lokpal in the country within 10 days and inform him.
Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R. Bhanumati’s bench asked the government to file an affidavit within 10 days giving information about the possible steps to be taken for the appointment of Lokpal in the country. At the center of the attorney general K. Venugopal submitted written instructions received from the government regarding the appointment of Lokpal.
The bench has fixed July 17 for the hearing of the case. The court was hearing a contempt plea filed by the NGO Common Cause. In the petition, despite the order of the court of 27th April, 2017, the issue of non-appointment of Lokpal has been raised.
The Supreme Court had said in its decision last year that to suspend the Lokpal law until the amended amendments are passed in Parliament, it is not unjustified. Let me tell you that BJP had raised the issue of corruption in a big way, but after getting its government in the center, nothing special about achieving the appointment of Lokpal has been done so far.
It is worth mentioning that the demand for appointment of Lokpal and Lokayukta during the anti-corruption movement against the previous UPA government had arisen. Under the pressure of Anna Hazare made a law to make it in Parliament, but after four and a half years the institution of Lokpal has not yet come into existence.
In the early days of Modi’s formation in the center, it was said that there is a need for a leader of the Opposition to choose Lokpal, which is not in the present government. That is why there is a problem in the formation of the Lokpal.
In the subsequent days, during the hearing on this issue, the Supreme Court made it clear that considering the second largest party in the Lok Sabha, the leader of the Congress party, Mallikarjun Kharge as leader of the opposition, the process of formation of the Lokpal should be completed. After the Supreme Court directive, a meeting of the Lokpal’s selection committee was also convened, but due to some reasons, it was not possible. Lokpal has not been formed in the states.
