Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. President Ramnath Kovind announced the appointment of Gogoi. On October 3, Gogoi has taken over as the 46th Chief Justice of India. Swearing-in ceremony was organized at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Wednesday at 10:45 am.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Deepak Misra, retired on October 2. He had sent Gogoi’s name to the Central Government as his successor. The central government had sealed it. Gogoi has taken over as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from today.

For the first time on the occasion of Ranjan Gogoi, the person of the North India is being appointed as the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice of Gogoi will be active till November 17, 2019. Justice Ranjan Gogoi was born on November 18, 1954 in Assam. On February 28, 2001, he became the judge of the High Court of Guwahati. On 12 February 2011, he became the Chief Justice of the Punjab-Haryana High Court. On April 23, 2012, he took over as the Supreme Court judge.

Ranjan Gogoi will have many challenges before the appointment of Chief Justice. Hearing on the Ayodhya verdict is the biggest challenge facing Gogoi. Also important are the removal of pending cases. Gogoi was among the four judges who had objected to the Supreme Court’s judgment last year for the first time in the history of the country.
