He joined the list of star throw star player Neeraj Chopra, who won gold medal in the last competition in 2016 with world record effort. He is, however, the first track player to win gold medal in the history of this competition.
Prior to India in the World Junior Championships, Border Poonia (Bronze in the Chakka Throw in 2002) and Navjeet Kaur Dhillon (Bronze Medal in 2014) won the medal for India.

Hima was the strongest contender for the title because of taking the best time in the current Under-20 season. In the 400m competition of the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast in April, the then Indian Under-20 record was at sixth place with 51.32 sec.
Subsequently, he improved his record in the national inter-state championship in Guwahati with 51.13 secs.
