GST Council meeting: Relaxation on tax-free sanitary napkins, including refrigerators-TVs

21 July :- In the 28th meeting of GST Council headed by Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, several major decisions were taken. In this meeting, the Council has removed Sanitary Napkin from the realm of Goods and Services Tax (GST). Sanitary napkins was included in the 12% tax slab so far.

Besides, broom, stone, marble, rakhi, wooden idols are excluded from GST. In addition to phosphoric acid, handloom, footwear of up to 1000 rupees is placed in a 5% slab. Explain that the footwear of up to Rs 500 rupees comes in this slab.

These items are in the slab of 18 per cent

Refrigerators, television up to 25 inches, lithium ion batteries, vacuum cleaners, food grinders-mixers, storage water heaters, hair dryer, hand dryer, paint, brush, water color, milk color, ice cream color, perfume, toilet spray and coded 18% are placed in the slab. These items were in the first 28 percent tax slab.

These things in 12 percent slab

The handbags, jewelery boxes, wooden boxes for the painting, glass designer glasses, designer mirrors and hand-made lamps have been placed in the 12 percent tax slab.

After the meeting, Finance Minister Piyush Goyal said that GST Council will now emphasize on preparing new jobs besides revenue collection. After assuming the charge of the Finance Minister, this was the first meeting of GST Council headed by Piyush Goyal.

Prior to this, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who was present in the meeting, accused the central government of cheating of GST. According to Manish Sisodia, the central government has thrown out Delhi’s Rs 3,000 crore in its GST kit.

The decision to free GST on Sanitary Napkin has given women great relief. In fact, Sanitary napkins was involved in the GST slab of up to 12 per cent. But this decision of the government was being criticized for a long time and many women organizations expressed their disappointment over this and urged PM Modi to tax free.

Bamboo 12% tax slab

While sitting in the meeting, Maharashtra’s Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiva told that the bamboo has been placed in the tax slab of 12 per cent. Apart from this, he claimed that Chess on sugar can be decided in the next meeting. Let us know that the next meeting of GST Council is due in Kerala.

In the meeting of November 2017, 213 items were removed from the maximum GST slab and included in 18% slab. Finished tax on 6 items included in 5% GST scope. Except for restaurants of Five Star Hotel, GST has been reduced from 18% to 5% on other hotels. In January 2018, tax on 54 services and 29 items was reduced.

Let me tell you that in 2017-18, GST came to 7.41 lakh crore rupees. The average monthly collection was 89,885 million. Collection records reached 1.03 lakh crore in April this year, but declined to Rs 94,016 crore in May and Rs 95,610 crore in June.
