04 June :- Facebook has finally decided to end the controversial ‘trending’ feature so that users can be given a new experience of news in the future. Breaking news notifications can be included in this.
In a statement, Head of Facebook’s News Product said, “We will remove the trading from Facebook next week and will also remove Trends APIs dependent products and third-party partner integration.”
Facebook introduced a trending feature in 2014 which aims to help people find news topics, which were popular in the entire community. This feature featured a collection of many headlines, but the social networking giant had to face the allegations of political bias soon.
It was reported in the NBC News report that initially Headlines were selected by humans (editor). The contractor who worked in this project claimed that Facebook used this feature to increase moderate issues and to suppress stereo thinking.
Facebook later removed these editors and used an algorithm to balance, which used to decide which headlines to be kept in the trending section.
But by algorithm sorting headlines, many fake news and objectionable content also started to get a place in Facebook’s trending feature.
