Changzhou: Olympic and world champions silver medalist PV Sindhu reached the pre-quarterfinals of the China Open badminton tournament, while Saina Nehwal had to outclass her opponent. Third seed Sindhu defeated Japan’s Siena Kawakami 21-15, 21-13 in the first round of the tournament.

Saina, who won the Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2014 and China Open in 2014, lost her 22-20, 8-21, 14-21 win over Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun in the first round of 48 minutes.

Manu Atri and B. Sumit Reddy’s national champion Jodi reached the second round of the match with Liao Min Chun and Soo Ching Heng of China Taipei 13-21, 21-13, 21-12 in 39 minutes.

The match between Sindhu and Kawakami was initially challenged. But then the Indian made 13-7 lead. Sindhu dominated the rally and won the first game easily. In the second game, Sindhu started off with a 6-lead lead. Kawakami has achieved success in scores 8-10 while coming back. The Indian had a lead of 11-9 before the break. After the break, Sindhu took 15-11 lead and easily won the match by getting 8 match points at 20-12.
