After the merger of State Bank of India’s subsidiaries, the Modi government has taken a big decision for the merger of some other public sector banks. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has announced that the public sector Dena Bank, Vijaya Bank and Bank of Baroda will be merged. After the merger, the bank will become the third largest bank in the country, he said. Union Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar also gave information about the merger to the media.

The government had announced plans for merger of public sector banks in the budget. Arun Jaitley said this is the first step taken by the government. Jaitley said that all the previous terms and conditions will be implemented by giving guarantee that no employee of the bank will be reduced in the process of merger.

The announcement of the merger on the backdrop of increasing credit outlook on the public sector banks, the rate of banking services in the country and the expected growth of the banking sector for the growth of the Indian economy is expected.
